Military History: A Closer Look At Regiments

There's a channel called Military History that talks about past battles. There are quite a few historic battles described there. Documentaries are created around the people who were instrumental to various wars. A historic account of the wars can both be frightening and fascinating. The first time I watched something on there, I realized that watching a war in retrospect reveals so much about how it started and the factors that led to the outcome.

One thing that might prove to be a great discovery is the role of regiments in military history.

Combat studies are more easily elucidated if the structure of how a battle is fought is clear. It’s easier for the command to flow from the leaders to the foot soldiers when there is a set hierarchy. If you’re studying the structure of a military unit to help you in your research of military history, you should learn more about regiments. It is said that regiments were called such during the sixteenth century, in France. A regiment is unit of the military that comprises battalions or a group of soldiers. A regiment follows a strict hierarchy, and most of the orders come from the Lieutenant Colonel.

Not all the individuals who make up a regiment are involved in combat. Some of the members of the regiment are asked to perform administrative functions. A striking factor that makes any regiment successful is its autonomy. Administrative tasks are just as challenging as combat related ones.

The most significant part of the regiment is its combat arm. If you will notice from war documentaries, most of those who survived the war and belonged in the same regiment became friends for life even during the time of peace. A regiment is a close-knit unit and all the members depend on each other to survive, especially during a time of war.

The regimental system is still applied in today’s world. The system functions at its best when there’s a special need to work as a team, such as when small scale police actions are needed. Some functions of military regiments include counter-insurgency operations and anti-terrorist procedures. In any combat setting, one will encounter the regiment hierarchy, which should be studied by anyone who is interested in a career in the military.
